How the Titan Tax Refund Advance Works in Elyria

📅 September 21, 2026 | ✍️ By Mariana Rodriguez | 🏷️ Blogs

For many Lorain County families, waiting for a federal tax refund can put extra pressure on the household budget. Car repairs, winter utility bills, rent, and other expenses do not always wait for the IRS.

The Elyria tax refund advance from Titan Tax gives qualifying clients another option. The Refund Advance program offers access to an advance of up to $7,000 based on an expected federal tax refund, subject to approval and applicable program terms.

Titan Tax offers the program from January 2 through March 15 at participating locations. Here is how the process works, what can affect the amount available, and what to bring to our Elyria office when preparing your 2026 tax return in 2027.

How the Elyria tax refund advance works

A Refund Advance is not the same thing as your IRS refund. It is an advance based on your anticipated federal tax refund.

The process begins by preparing your return and determining your expected federal refund. If you choose to apply for an advance, your application is then evaluated according to the program’s identity-verification, eligibility, and underwriting requirements.

1. Bring your tax documents

Come prepared with the income forms, identification, dependent information, and other documents that apply to your return. Having complete information helps your preparer accurately calculate your expected refund.

2. Prepare your return

Your preparer reviews your income, filing status, dependents, withholding, and potential tax credits and deductions. If you worked multiple jobs, earned self-employment income, received overtime, or experienced a major change during 2026, bring that information with you.

3. Apply for the Refund Advance

If you want a Refund Advance, you can complete the applicable application process. Titan Tax does not require a credit check for the Refund Advance. Approval and the amount available depend on factors including your expected refund, identity verification, eligibility criteria, and underwriting.

4. File when the IRS opens the season

The IRS sets the official opening date for individual federal income tax returns each year. Preparing your return early can help you get ready for filing season, but you should wait until you have received all required tax documents before submitting the return.

As of September 2026, the IRS has not yet announced the official opening date for individual 2026 tax returns filed during the 2027 filing season.

5. Receive your approved advance

If approved, advance funds are provided according to the applicable program terms. When the federal refund is later issued, the advance amount is deducted from the refund, reducing the direct refund payment to the taxpayer.

How much Refund Advance can you get in Elyria?

The maximum Refund Advance offered by Titan Tax is $7,000. However, not every taxpayer will qualify, and approval for an advance does not automatically mean approval for the maximum amount.

Your expected federal refund is one of the factors that can affect the amount available. That refund can change based on income, filing status, withholding, dependents, refundable tax credits, and other information reported on the return.

For example, taxpayers who qualify for credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit may have a different expected refund than taxpayers with similar wages who do not qualify for those credits.

Still, a particular refund amount does not guarantee approval for a particular advance amount. Your actual eligibility is determined through the applicable Refund Advance process.

What can affect your Refund Advance?

Several factors can affect the amount available or whether an application is approved.

  • Your expected federal refund. A smaller expected refund may limit the size of the advance available.
  • Identity verification and underwriting. Refund Advances are subject to eligibility requirements and approval.
  • Missing information. Missing W-2s, 1099s, dependent information, or other required tax documents can prevent your preparer from completing an accurate return.
  • Possible refund offsets. Certain past-due federal taxes, child support, state obligations, and qualifying federal debts may reduce a federal refund.

If you believe a federal debt may affect your refund, it is worth checking before relying on a particular refund amount. Tax preparers do not control Treasury offsets, and the final amount can differ if a government agency applies an eligible debt against the refund.

Overtime, layoffs, and your 2026 tax return

Income can change considerably from one year to the next for workers in manufacturing, construction, healthcare, logistics, and the trades. More overtime, fewer hours, a job change, or a period of unemployment can all change the final tax calculation.

The Earned Income Tax Credit is one example. EITC eligibility and the amount of the credit depend partly on earned income and adjusted gross income. Depending on where your household falls within the applicable income range, additional earnings can increase, decrease, or eventually eliminate the credit.

A layoff or reduction in hours can also change your refund, but it does not automatically mean a larger refund. The result depends on your total annual income, withholding, unemployment compensation, filing status, credits, and other factors.

The 2026 qualified overtime deduction

There is also a federal deduction for certain qualified overtime compensation for tax years 2025 through 2028.

The deduction generally applies to overtime compensation required under the Fair Labor Standards Act that exceeds the worker’s regular rate of pay. For qualifying time-and-a-half compensation, that generally means the additional “half” portion rather than the entire overtime payment.

The maximum annual deduction is $12,500 per individual return, or $25,000 for taxpayers filing Married Filing Jointly. The deduction begins to phase out when modified adjusted gross income exceeds $150,000, or $300,000 for joint filers.

For 2026, employers and other applicable payers have reporting requirements for qualified overtime compensation. Bring your W-2 and any other relevant compensation records so your preparer can determine whether the deduction applies to you.

When will your IRS refund arrive?

The IRS issues many electronically filed refunds within about three weeks, but that is not a guarantee. Returns that contain errors, require additional review, or involve other processing issues can take longer.

Taxpayers claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit should also know that federal law prevents the IRS from issuing refunds containing those credits before mid-February. The restriction applies to the entire refund.

That is one reason some taxpayers consider a Refund Advance rather than relying on an estimated IRS deposit date. The advance is optional, and you can file your tax return without applying for one.

What to bring to Titan Tax Elyria

Coming prepared can help your preparer complete the return accurately. Depending on your situation, bring:

  • A valid government-issued photo ID
  • Social Security or taxpayer identification information required for you and anyone included on the return
  • Every W-2 received from employers for 2026
  • 1099 forms and records for freelance, contract, gig, or other applicable income
  • Documents related to tax credits or deductions that may apply to you
  • Banking information if needed for direct deposit or related tax products
  • Your prior-year tax return if available
  • Any relevant notices from the IRS or Ohio Department of Taxation

If you are unsure whether a document matters, bring it with you. Your preparer can determine whether it is needed for the return.
